CASTELL ECOLOGY

Clear and pragmatic advice informed by professional ecological survey and appraisal

ABOUT US

Castell Ecology is an independent professional ecological consultancy working with a diverse and growing client base in the private and commercial sectors.

We are experienced in delivering a broad range of cost-effective ecology services to identify, record and report on the biodiversity of a site and provide pragmatic ecological solutions for our clients' projects. From our West Cheshire base, we are ideally situated to cover North West England, the Midlands, North Wales or UK-wide.

At Castell Ecology we provide an extensive range of ecology services, from initial site assessment, e.g. Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, through to second phase surveys for protected species including bats, Great Crested Newt, birds, Badger, Water Vole and reptiles.

Whether you need a survey for a small residential planning application or have a larger development or scheme requiring a broader scope of ecological services, we have the experience, knowledge and expertise to work with you to gain planning consent and manage the impact of your development on species and their habitats.

All of our surveys are undertaken by qualified and experienced ecologists working to the current best practice guidelines and to the standards expected by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

The survey reports we produce are clear and concise and are enhanced by detailed and accurate plans generated with a GIS mapping system. Each report details the survey results, the requirement for any further survey(s) that may be needed, an assessment of the potential impacts of the scheme on any protected habitats and/or species, recommendations to mitigate those impacts, and methods to enhance the developed site for biodiversity – all of the information required by the planning decision makers.

Working with a network of associates and assistants, Castell Ecology is able to provide expert, professional advice and solutions to any of your ecological needs.

Richard Castell

Castell Ecology was established by Richard Castell, an experienced ecologist, respected ornithologist and a full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

He has been employed in the environmental sector since 1994, working in ecological consultancy, delivering advice and services to a broad range of clients with projects ranging from the small scale to those that are large and complex, since 2002.

In the course of his life and career, Richard has developed knowledge and experience of most protected species and is nationally recognised for his expertise in the ecology of breeding birds.

A Field Guide to Monitoring Nests

In 2010, Richard he was invited by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) -- the UK’s leading bird research organisation -- to co-author A Field Guide to Monitoring Nests.

Published in 2011, the book is now considered to be the definitive guide to finding and studying the nests of British birds.

Breeding Birds of the Western Palearctic

In 2009 Richard and his father co-authored Breeding Birds of the Western Palearctic.

The vast collection of photographs presented on this DVD-ROM is the result of the most extensive effort ever undertaken to document the breeding cycle of birds.
